Poirier believes McGregor should be forced through proper procedures before UFC return

Dustin Poirier (left) and Conor McGregor (right) — MMA JunkieUFC star Dustin Poirier opened up on Conor McGregor’s potential return to UFC in December.The Irishman has not been a part of the testing pool since breaking his leg against Poirier in their trilogy fight at UFC 264 in July 2021, as official records on US Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) website show he is still yet to submit a drug testing sample since then. As per the UFC policy, McGregor needs to complete six months of mandatory drug testing before appearing in a fight but he has not yet joined the testing programme.But, the Irishman has announced that he will take on Michael Chandler in December and the only way that can happen is if he is given an exemption.Poirier talked about this issue and believes that USADA would be making a mockery of itself if McGregor gets an exemption.“I like USADA, and I do think they’re doing a good job of cleaning up our sport,” Poirier told MMA News. “But for me, if they waive that (six-month testing period) and allow him to compete with no drug testing, it kind of just makes a joke of the whole thing.“Just remove it completely. There shouldn’t be grey areas. It’s white and black with USADA, you take tests and pass them, you’re able to compete. You don’t take tests, you don’t compete.“There was never a grey area before. We’ll see what happens. I’m not sh*tting on the UFC, I’m not sh*tting on USADA. I don’t want to accuse or say things about either company without them making an official decision.“I don’t know what they’re going to do with Conor and the drug testing thing. But if they do allow him to compete without drug testing, they’re making a whole joke of USADA.”It must be noted that the only way a UFC fighter can skip the mandatory drug-testing program is due to “exceptional circumstances”.Former UFC Star Brock Lesnar used this defence to compete on short notice against Mark Hunt at UFC 200 in 2016.However, despite Lesnar winning with a unanimous decision, the result was later overturned to a no-contest after the WWE superstar failed both an out-of-competition and a night-of-fight drug test.Poirier is not the only one worried about McGregor making his return without going through proper procedures as earlier, Daniel Cormier questioned the potential USADA exemption for McGregor.
