Pakistan thumped New Zealand by 88 runs during the first T20I of the five-match series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Friday.

Chasing a target of 183 runs, New Zealand were bundled out for only 94 runs in 15.3 overs.

Pacer Haris Rauf was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with figures of 4-18 in 3.3 overs.

Imad Wasim claimed two wickets, meanwhile Shaheen Afridi, Faheem Ashraf, Zaman Khan and Shadab Khan bagged one each.

Pakistan's clinical bowling ensured that New Zealand were under pressure throughout the run-chase, with the home side picking up regular wickets.

Mark Chapman top-scored with 34 runs, meanwhile skipper Tom Latham added 20 runs.

Earlier, Pakistan had set a target of 183 runs after winning the toss and deciding to bat first.

Openers Babar Azam (9 off 7) and Mohammad Rizwan (8 off 10) were dismissed early with Pakistan reduced to 30-2 in the fifth over.

However, Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman brought Pakistan back in the game with an impressive 79-run partnership in 43 balls.

Ayub looked in great touch, 47 runs in only 28 balls, but was unlucky to be run out in the 12th over of the innings.

Ayub's departure sparked a mini collapse as Pakistan slipped to 131-6 in 14 over.

Zaman scored 47 runs in 34 balls with the help of four fours and two maximums.

All-rounders Imad Wasim and Faheem Ashraf chipped in with valuable contributions, 16 off 13 and 22 off 16 respectively, to help Pakistan post a competitive total on the board.

Haris Rauf also smashed 11 runs in five balls.

For New Zealand, pacer Matt Henry bagged a hat-trick and was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with figures of 3-32 in four overs. He dismissed Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi.

Adam Milne and Ben Lister claimed two wickets each.

Pakistan and New Zealand will also meet in five one-day internationals after the T20 series, honing preparations for this year´s 50-over World Cup in India.

Pakistan have fielded a full-strength squad for the series with prolific batter Babar Azam back in charge of the side after being rested for the T20Is against Afghanistan.

Azam also became the third player from Pakistan to feature in 100 T20I matches.

The Men in Green, runners-up to England in last year´s T20 World Cup in Australia, also welcome back key players Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf.

Shaheen was playing his first international match since injuring his knee in the World Cup final.

Pakistan boast a new backroom team with former New Zealand all-rounder Grant Bradburn taking head coach duties for the 10 matches from Abdur Rehman.

Eight Kiwis are missing because of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and skipper Kane Williamson has a bad knee injury, leaving the captaincy to batsman Tom Latham — and providing plenty of opportunity for newcomers to shine.
